Bilingual Radio Journalist (English/ Spanish)

Radio Kingston en Español, serving as the new digital sister station of WKNY Radio Kingston, is seeking a Bilingual Radio Journalist. The reporter will be responsible for researching, reporting, writing, and presenting the news regularly on the Radio Kingston en Español web-based platform, as well as occasionally on-air at WKNY 1490 AM/ 107.9 FM. 

 

Across both platforms, Radio Kingston serves a population of approximately 24,000 listeners in Kingston, New York, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The successful candidate will be skilled at reporting accurate, culturally relevant, and compelling stories in both English and Spanish for WKNY 1490 AM/107.9 FM and Radio Kingston en Español via the web-based platform. Key duties will include identifying and developing story leads, conducting on-air interviews, and translating these stories into both English and Spanish.

A través de ambas plataformas, Radio Kingston atiende a una población de aproximadamente 24,000 radio oyentes en Kingston, Nueva York, en el corazón del Valle del Hudson. El/La candidato/a seleccionado/a deberá tener la capacidad de reportar historias precisas, culturalmente relevantes y convincentes, tanto en inglés como en español, para WKNY 1490 AM/107.9 FM y Radio Kingston en Español a través de la plataforma web. This is a unique opportunity for a journalist to help build a vibrant, cultural, and informative platform for thousands of listeners in Kingston and the surrounding areas. Since 2018, Radio Kingston has amplified the many voices of the community, dedicating part of its airtime to Spanish-language programming with popular shows like La Voz con Mariel Fiori and Mochilero con Antonio Flores-Lobos, among others. After nearly seven years of audience growth through cultural events and community engagement, all six current Spanish-language shows will transition to the new digital platform (which includes a website, mobile app, Facebook, and YouTube channels), creating a cohesive and comprehensive experience for our listeners. The platform will also provide opportunities to expand existing shows and introduce new hosts and programming that align with Radio Kingston’s mission of serving and reflecting the community.

 

Radio Kingston en Español informs, inspires, and connects our Spanish-speaking communities through accessible, inclusive, and culturally-rooted programming. Radio Kingston en Español will uplift community voices and stories that reflect the realities, dreams, and strengths of our diverse Latinx and Hispanic neighbors. Radio Kingston en Español is committed to language justice and envisions a local media space where Spanish-speaking residents feel seen, heard, and empowered to share their truths, access essential information, and celebrate their cultures.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing, pitching, researching, and producing news stories, often focusing on issues affecting multicultural communities
  • Conducting interviews and producing high-quality segments in both English and Spanish for the Radio platform
  • Translating information accurately and ensuring content is culturally sensitive and relevant to all audiences
  • Reporting both Live & recorded segments on-air, including studio and remote broadcasts
  • Building relationships and trust in the Kingston community
  • Working with the Executive Director, Program Director, Radio Hosts, and Community Partners 

 

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Professional-level fluency (speaking and writing) in English and Spanish
  • Journalism skills, including ethics, news judgment, and writing/communication skills
  • Technical skills: Able to use audio editing software, broadcast equipment, and content management systems (CMS).
  • Curiosity and a passion for reporting on topics important to the communities served
  • Ability to adapt and show flexibility in a dynamic community environment
  • A degree or equivalent work experience in Journalism in Radio or other media contexts

Compensation

Salary: $72,000 to 80,000/year, commensurate with experience. This range represents Radio Kingston's good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible base salary range at the time of posting and is one part of the total rewards provided to employees.
