Job Description

The Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University seeks applicants for the Eugene C. Patterson Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy, an endowed chair affiliated with the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy.

We seek an accomplished media practitioner whose work demonstrates commitment to an independent, high-integrity, and inclusive news ecosystem that serves the public interest. Applicants with a focus on one or more of the following areas will be given strong consideration: innovative forms of storytelling; media leadership; the intersection of new technologies and journalism (e.g., digital platforms; AI); audience engagement; and the intersection of journalism, democracy, and public policy. We also seek candidates who embody the spirit of Gene Patterson, a courageous editor in the American South who spoke out against racism. The Patterson Professor will be an inspiring mentor and compelling teacher who will teach undergraduate courses in the Sanford School’s Journalism and Media minor and who will also be able to contribute to the School’s core teaching in its undergraduate and graduate programs in public policy and public affairs. Additionally, the Patterson Chair will play a key role in the research and policy engagement activities of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy.

Candidates with a graduate degree in a related field (e.g., masters in journalism) are strongly preferred.

Candidates should submit a letter of application that describes their professional contributions and other relevant work experience, and which explains why they are interested in joining the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke. The letter, along with a CV and the names of three references (we will not contact references until the semi-finalist stage).

Candidate’s application materials should be submitted via: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/31624

Review of applications will begin immediately. Applications submitted by March 2nd will be guaranteed consideration. Questions or requests for additional information can be directed toward Phil Napoli, search committee chair, at philip.napoli@duke.edu.

The Sanford School includes nearly 70 interdisciplinary full-time faculty and offers an undergraduate major, five Masters programs, and a Ph.D. program. The Sanford School houses several research centers and offers degree-related programs and opportunities in Washington, DC, China, Scotland, London and Geneva. Duke is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to providing employment opportunity without regard to an individual's age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, (including pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions), sexual orientation, or military status.

Duke aspires to create a community built on collaboration, innovation, creativity, and belonging. Our collective success depends on the robust exchange of ideas—an exchange that is best when the rich diversity of our perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences flourishes. To achieve this exchange, it is essential that all members of the community feel secure and welcome, that the contributions of all individuals are respected, and that all voices are heard. All members of our community have a responsibility to uphold these values.

Please note that Duke specifically seeks information about past misconduct or policy violations (in the past ten (10) years) and/or relevant pending investigations as part of the application process. Disclosures will not be an automatic bar to hiring but, instead, will initiate further dialogue regarding past actions and steps taken to address them. Disclosures will not be shared with search committees during the application review process.
