Job Requirements

KRIV FOX 26 / KTXH My20, the FOX Duopoly in HOUSTON, TX is re-imagining how local news is gathered and delivered. We're hiring a creative storyteller to serve morning news consumers. You should have a passion for breaking news, severe weather of all kinds, and owning the big story of the day. Someone who understands that the role of a reporter must evolve beyond linear television to meet our audiences where they need us. We're big on non-traditional techniques that bring relevant, memorable, and impactful storytelling to our website, news and streaming apps, social platforms and eventually on our linear channel. If your typical shift involves producing a news package with a live intro and tag, then submitting a web story after the newscast goes to air, this job is not the right fit.

The ideal candidate will have an ability to create content in ways that defy conventional thinking about local news. This position is geared toward morning news consumers, providing content that we distribute via linear broadcast and our FOX Local digital platform.  To serve both audiences seamlessly, you’ll need to be a self-starter with excellent writing skills and a vision for how each story will be told throughout the morning, on different platforms. Although this is not an MMJ position, the storyteller will be expected to participate in the content creation process through creative shooting and editing on smartphones and other technology, distilling complex themes into easily digestible forms using text, graphics and music. You’ll need to be resourceful, adaptable, innovative, and results oriented with high energy and a positive outlook.

Strong live skills and the ability to meet frequent rolling deadlines are critical for those breaking news and wall-to-wall severe weather situations which often define the Houston news landscape.  We set big goals for audience engagement on social platforms and the reporter will be given the tools to meet and exceed those goals. The storyteller must be adept at using social media to enhance their newsgathering and reach broader audiences.

A minimum of 3 years of experience on-camera is preferred, but we will consider all forms of on-camera work, not just previous television experience. Robust social media presence is required for consideration. The work you present as your portfolio should reflect a daily focus on telling stories for a digital first audience independent of linear television. This is an early morning position, but you must be able to work late-night shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. Houston experiences year-round high impact weather events and newsroom staff must be available to work on site or in the field when scheduled. Must have a valid driver's license.
