Editor and General Manager, Times of San Diego

 

As Editor and General Manager for Times of San Diego, you will lead the way as we continue to build Times of San Diego as a future-focused nonprofit newsroom dedicated to San Diego County. You will play a crucial role in using research and community listening to create and execute relevant audience and editorial plans while building a sustainable business model. You will be the brand ambassador for the Times, communicating the community’s need and desire for more quality local news and information. You will work with counterparts at NEWSWELL to grow our community support through events and partnerships, energize our membership base with newsletters and meetups, and ensure revenue streams to support our mission-driven general-interest journalism. You will work to uplift and strengthen the entire San Diego media ecosystem by sharing content for free, developing partnerships with other local media, providing training on new technology and industry best practices and striving to support the overall journalism footprint in San Diego County.

NEWSWELL helps newsrooms become nonprofit and for-community. It provides strategic guidance, innovative solutions and wrap-around operations so local journalists can focus on local news and newsrooms can best serve their communities. NEWSWELL partners with Arizona State University, the nation’s most innovative nine years in a row, to offer game-changing ideas, tools and research. NEWSWELL transforms local news to help communities and democracy thrive.​


The pay scale for this position ranges from $95,000 - $120,000

 

What you'll do

You will lead by

  • Serving as the liaison between our newsroom and the community, ensuring transparency and responsiveness to community feedback and concerns.

  • Overseeing the editorial and revenue functions of the Times, with back-end support from leaders at NEWSWELL.

  • Actively participating in community meetings, representing the organization.

  • Establishing goals and implementing performance standards to drive continuous improvement.

  • Fostering a collaborative environment and recruiting, motivating, developing and retaining a high-performance team.

 

You will innovate by

  • Using data, community listening and other feedback to formulate and execute audience and editorial plans that meet the evolving needs of San Diego communities.

  • Partnering with NEWSWELL, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Center for the Future of Local News at Cronkite, as well as San Diego schools and universities to propose and execute local news experiments, projects and products that push our industry forward and connect with new readers and consumers.

  • Identifying new products, technologies and strategies that could address some of the most pressing challenges facing the media industry, conducting experiments with those tools or strategies and sharing the results of the experiments. 

  • Working with the NEWSWELL team to use smart and ethical AI practices and tools to extend newsgathering and delivery in San Diego County.

  • Collaborating with engineering/product teams at NEWSWELL, identifying and implementing product launches and improvements to help better deliver news and information to more people in San Diego County, especially those who do not currently consume news.

 

You will engage by

  • Developing and implementing strategies to expand Times of San Diego’s reach, with a focus on delivering more news and information to underserved communities.

  • Working with editorial leaders to continue to hone content that’s audience centric and ensure our news is relevant and helpful to readers’ lives.

  • Planning and implementing outreach initiatives events and campaigns to enhance awareness of our newsroom and support the community.

  • Cultivating partnerships with local media, organizations, schools and businesses to support the greater San Diego community.

  • Upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and credibility while championing the First Amendment.

 

You will operate by

  • Overseeing daily news operations for Times of San Diego and its seven hyperlocal online, print and newsletter brands.

  • Leading by example in assisting the team with reporting, writing, assigning and editing as necessary.

  • Directing the overall operations of Times of San Diego sites, newspapers, newsletters and social accounts.

  • Collaborating with internal and external partners to create special projects that resonate with the community, promote meaningful dialogue and provide needed news and information.

  • Working with the NEWSWELL membership team to advance membership goals.

  • Coordinating with digital advertising agencies as needed.


Job Requirements

  • Proven leadership in newsroom or media organization management

  • Commitment to journalistic integrity, ethics, and First Amendment principles

  • Experience developing audience-centric content plans

  • Skilled in community listening and translating feedback into editorial strategy

  • Knowledge of data-driven decision-making and audience analytics

  • Strategic thinking around sustainable revenue models for local news

  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships with universities, media outlets, and community organizations

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Experience overseeing daily operations across multiple platforms and brands

  • Ability to interpret data and research to inform editorial and business decisions

  • Visionary thinking with a focus on innovation and sustainability in journalism

     

Relevant qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in journalism or related field related or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in journalism, with at least five years in management.
