Job Description

The Dallas Morning News seeks an ambitious and versatile editor to drive our business coverage to the next level in one of America’s fastest-growing regions.

Texas’ population just crossed the 30 million mark and demographers predict it’ll grow to nearly 40 million by 2036 — the equivalent of adding a city the size of Austin every year for the next decade. That explosive growth touches every facet of life for those living, working and playing here, as well as the soon-to-arrive transplants. The impact of such growth raises serious questions about access, equity and resources.

For business journalists, there’s no better place in the nation to be stationed. Dallas-Fort Worth is home to two dozen Fortune 500 companies, nearly 80 publicly traded companies with more than $1 billion in revenue, two major airports and two of the industry’s biggest airlines, five major league sports teams and literally thousands of other firms representing every segment of the economy.

We’re looking for an editor who can lead a team of skilled business reporters to connect and dissect these topics into urgent, aggressive and revelatory journalism that illuminates the challenges ahead for our region.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with data and records, have a strong understanding of social media and digital metrics, and have a passion for growing our online audience. The ability to manage a team to produce a balance of enterprise and daily news coverage is a must-have trait.

This editor will oversee one of the largest regional business news teams in the country. You will be supported by an assistant editor and manage 10 reporters covering real estate, retail, transportation, airlines, diverse communities, health and breaking/trending business news.

This editor must have impeccable news judgment, strong leadership and organizational skills and the ability to manage change. In addition, this leader should be devoted to the growth and development of all News staffers and to DEI efforts.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Plan for both short-term coverage and long-term projects with an eye toward features/enterprise, distinctive journalism that differentiates our report from a list of competitors
  • Generate content ideas that include an emphasis on the diversity of voices, stories, subjects and perspectives
  • Follow closely and develop insights into analytics in coverage areas of responsibility and the newsroom at large as well as communicating goals, wins and losses
  • Ensure that stories are reported fairly, accurately and thoroughly, with sharp, compelling writing
  • Build trusting relationships with staffers
  • Work across departments in and out of the newsroom to maximize the editorial and revenue possibilities of sports content
  • Take a hands-on approach to breaking news across digital platforms and display a willingness to create content as needed
  • Show strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask on deadline
  • Display exceptional news judgment with ability to recognize digital potential of stories that will resonate with our audience
  • Play a role as a newsroom leader with newsroom projects and special digital initiatives, including video and audio efforts, as needed

Job Requirements

  • Applicants should have at least 10 years experience in editing roles.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong news judgment and understanding of good journalistic practices
  • Ability to lead a team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Clear understanding of digital, audio and print production requirements
  • Familiarity with analyses of our audiences, digital and print
  • Proficiency in publishing and planning programs (Airtable, Arc and CuePrint) and communications tools (Gmail, Slack)
  • Ability to read and assess staff content, work effectively under deadline pressure, communicate clearly, follow instructions, adapt quickly to changes in technology and workflow and lead a team.

A diverse newsroom best serves our community that fosters an inclusive work environment for people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, age, or sexual orientation.
