editorial skills – keen ability to analyze the accuracy of research. As a publisher, managing editor and sports editor, I performed structural editing, copy editing and proofreading for various print and online publications. I also generated story ideas; planned, assigned and edited content; commissioned stories and art/graphic; oversaw production schedules and editorial calendars and supervised editorial staffs and cultivated freelancers.

technology skills – am comfortable with technology and am adaptable to new technologies. I can figure out how to make the best use of newest social media or technology being used or can find someone who can help me. As sports editor, I live-Tweeted football game scores and plays, interviewed and shot video of coaches/players after games to post on social media before writing a game story for print publication. I also developed and created my own podcast to promote my book and essays. I am proficient in layout and have worked with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator programs on a daily basis to get weekly newspapers out to the public via the printed page, e-newsletter and social media. I also have experience updating and using web-based content management systems (CMS) through my work with the city of Austin.

confidentiality competency – have experience dealing with confidential documents through my work as an educator adhering to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). I also had to manage payroll and insurance matters with employees at the newspaper, and I abide by the seven principles of journalism.

communication and public relations experience – spoke to local civic groups and schools about the functions of the newspaper, worked on various public relations events related to the newspaper and have lectured and done a variety of readings for students in college, high school and general audiences.

collaboration and leadership experience – was part of a Core Curriculum Committee that set the guidelines and established a mandatory introduction to college life course for all incoming freshman during year three of downward expansion at the University of Houston at Victoria. I also helped the English department with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation by serving on the SACSCOC Accreditation Committee. As the co-publisher of the weekly newspaper The Rockdale Reporter, which has a staff of five and $150,000 budget, I helped the business through the COVID pandemic by writting grants to secure funding to keep people employed without having to furlough anyone and continued to publish the weekly newspaper the pandemic and Texas freeze. I have coordinated editorial content, assigned stories, cultivated freelance writers and photographers, collected invoices, wrote articles and edited for Rock & Vine, Moderna and Hispanic magazines, which are/were monthly publications. I have also coordinated editorial content for newspaper special sections, wrote news stories and columns and designed pages for The Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post. As a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, I have judged and chaired fiction and nonfiction contests.

organization and promotion skills – helped  set up and arranged meetings/conferences for the state and city entities, as well as readings in bookstores for the promotion of my own books in Texas, Southern and Northern California and invited  authors to join in order to promote my second book of fiction “Fight Like a Man and Other Stories We Tell Our Children," which was published in 2017 by the University of New Mexico Press, also set up readings for "Brides and Sinners in El Chuco" in New York City in 2006.

innovation program experience – have had to explain to a general population how redistricting in the city of Austin works, a sample of my efforts can be seen here https://www.austintexas.gov/icrc; and taught some of the first synchronous lectures with Blackboard components, as well as online courses for Texas Tech University-Fredericksburg. At Texas Tech University, I helped bring hybrid media studies courses to the Fredericksburg site—journalism and photography. I taught the Principles of Journalism and News writing and found an instructor to teach photography to help increase the numbers of students and faculty at the rural site.
