Job Description

The School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time, professional-track faculty member at the rank of assistant professor in the areas of AI, journalism and media to begin in Fall 2027. The position is a three-year appointment. The School is part of the top-ranked Moody College of Communication, which includes programs in Advertising & Public Relations, Communication and Leadership, Communication Studies, Radio-Television-Film, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. The School, which offers B.J., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, is housed in the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media.

We seek an accomplished media professional whose work centers on the integration of artificial intelligence into journalism and media. Individuals with backgrounds in technology reporting, data journalism, applications of Ai in the practice of journalism, and/or AI-related product design and development are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in AI, journalism and media and, depending on curricular needs, may also teach courses that serve students across Moody College's majors. Dependent upon their expertise, the candidate may be asked to teach topics including the ethics of AI use, reporting and writing with AI, the impact of AI on journalism and media, and other uses of AI in newsrooms and other media-focused workplaces. The faculty member will mentor students, contribute to curriculum development, help strengthen relationships with industry partners, and support the school’s and college’s efforts to assess how students are learning to apply AI tools, identify gaps in preparedness and inform curricular strategy over time.

Dependent upon the qualifications of the candidate, there may be opportunities to participate in the school’s Media Innovation Group, an important organization funded by the Dallas Morning News Initiative.
