Job Description

Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is seeking a Public Affairs Supervising Editor.

About the Position:

The Public Affairs Editor is a key editor role that leads CPR’s coverage of government, politics, and civic life, ensuring reporting is accurate, fair and relevant to our audience. This role, in partnership with news leadership, sets editorial strategy for the public affairs beat. On a daily basis, the Public Affairs Editor assigns and edits stories across digital and audio platforms, and manages reporters in producing impactful, accountability journalism. This role also handles Public Affairs enterprise and investigative reporting as well as overseeing Purplish, our politics podcast.

You are expected to reside in Colorado - preferably in the greater Denver area - upon starting; this is not a remote position. This position will work M - F with occasional evening or weekend work.

About You:

You’re an editor with a strong understanding of public affairs issues and policies, experience navigating political cycles, and the ability to plan long-term coverage such as elections. You bring sound news judgment and a commitment to serving audiences in a multimedia, digital-first environment. You stay steady under pressure, making timely editorial decisions while keeping your team focused and supported.

You lead with collaboration, clarity and care for your team and colleagues across the newsroom. You have strong editing and writing skills for both broadcast and digital, and you enjoy leading and coaching reporters at all levels. You are organized, transparent in your communication and proactive in keeping colleagues informed about your team’s work.

You’re curious, adaptable and approach challenges with openness and a commitment to growth. You value inclusivity, seek out diverse perspectives and believe CPR’s journalism should reflect the full breadth of the communities we serve.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years experience editing and producing audio and digital news with a demonstrated ability to write and edit clearly for both broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with the public affairs beat.
  • Strong editorial judgment and a thorough understanding of journalistic ethics.
  • Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring reporters to deliver timely news in a daily news environment.
  • Experience partnering across newsroom teams, using excellent verbal and written communication and clear follow-through to support cross-team collaboration.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Experience publishing in content management systems and working with newsroom production tools (audio editing software such as Adobe Audition and automation platforms such as Pardot).

Education Equivalency:

  • A fully relatable bachelor’s or master’s degree may replace some of the required years of experience needed to qualify for the position, but is not required for the role.

Don't meet every single requirement? Research has shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Colorado Public Radio, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, equitable and authentic workplace. If you're excited about this role, but your past experience doesn't perfectly align with every qualification in the job posting, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles with us.

Benefits:

Colorado Public Radio is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package that reflects our culture of caring. Our employees have access to: 100 percent employer paid individual health, life, and disability coverage; an outstanding paid family medical leave policy plus paid holidays and a very generous sick, vacation, and personal time off plan; voluntary offerings such as dental and vision; a retirement plan with no waiting or vesting periods; flexible schedules; engagement and development opportunities; and a casual atmosphere.
