Job Description

Deputy Editor, Investigations - Job Posting

inewsource is an award-winning community-focused nonprofit newsroom dedicated to improving lives in the San Diego region and beyond through impactful, investigative and accountability journalism. We are unique among San Diego news providers in the way we involve community members in our work. We provide a public service through our commitment to investigative reporting, community-centered storytelling and stories that inform and empower.

In 2025 our national honors included being named a Pulitzer finalist for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary and winning an Institute for Nonprofit News Insight Award for Visual Journalism for our reporting on fentanyl’s impacts. We also won a First Amendment Coalition Free Speech and Open Government award for our reporting on illegal rent increases in public housing.

We’re looking for an Deputy Editor – Investigations to lead investigative and community reporters covering issues of national, state and local significance. This editor will play a key role in inewsource producing important investigations, including projects, while helping us turn quicker local accountability stories for our readers across the county.

The Deputy Editor should be skilled as an investigative reporter and/or editor with a track record of delivering high-quality reporting with impact. The ideal candidate will understand the value in engaging with diverse audiences to inform our reporting and our hiring practices. Experience covering immigration, the environment, federal or state government, legal affairs or law enforcement is a plus. Experience managing reporters and editorial workflows strongly preferred, but not a dealbreaker for the right candidate.

Other necessary skills: exceptional line editing; commitment to accuracy and fairness; strong interpersonal and team skills; excellent organization and communication skills; and the ability to lead, coach and inspire direct reports in-person and remotely.

Diversity is a core value at inewsource – we believe that a variety of experiences and vantage points lead to better, more nuanced journalism and a better-informed community. If you have lived experience or have worked and reported with diverse communities, we would love to hear from you.

We will only consider candidates located in or willing to relocate to the San Diego area.
