Photojournalist Job Opening

The San Antonio Report is seeking an energetic and curious photojournalist to help cover essential community news and features in the Bexar County area. We’re looking for an experienced visual storyteller to join our newsroom and help illustrate daily stories with strong still images, as well as using videography to tell longer-form stories.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a fast-paced news environment with a track record of meeting deadlines with quality work. The position requires a flexible work schedule with evening and weekend work. The right candidate will be expected to pitch and create compelling video reports and documentary projects alongside their regular slate of daily photography assignments.

Our photojournalists are often interacting with our community the most directly of anyone in our newsroom, so the candidate will need to be personable, thoughtful and cool under pressure. The assignments will be determined by the news of the day, from City Council meetings to drone work to protests, and the photojournalist will need to be prepared for anything. The San Antonio Report equips our journalists with professional camera equipment, proper PPE (personal protective equipment) and a drone when necessary, and always considers the safety of our staff first on every assignment.

The visual aspect of our news product is vital to our growing and engaged readership. We strive to employ a diverse and inclusive workforce that looks like the community in which we report.

Job Requirements

SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

• Strong photojournalistic skill, with the ability to use professional photo equipment

• Mastery of camera operation, composition, lighting and exposure

• Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom proficiency for processing images

• The ability to tell complex stories through striking, clear images

• Ability to work in the field, sometimes in challenging situations

• Video and audio production and editing experience preferred

• Drone experience preferred

• Schedule flexibility (some nights, weekend work)

• Spanish proficiency is a plus

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent work experience

This is a full-time, exempt position and is based in San Antonio, TX. 

The minimum starting salary for this position is $45,000 and is commensurate with experience and skill set. Some of the benefits employees enjoy are 20 days of personal time off, 12 paid holidays, health benefits, a 401(k) plan, and paid parental leave. We also provide paid downtown parking and stipends for gas and cell phone.
