Job Description

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks an Engagement Manager to join the SciLine department.

SciLine – a free service for journalists and scientists that aims to get more research-backed evidence into news stories – seeks a bilingual Engagement Manager to help expand the reach of the organization’s programs to new and emerging audiences – including local newsrooms, Spanish-language media outlets, and social media communicators. The successful candidate will be fluent in both English and Spanish, understand the journalism landscape, and have experience or interest in working with news influencers. This position is full-time, and can be either fully remote, or hybrid – working out of our Washington, D.C., office.

SciLine welcomes applicants with nontraditional career paths. If you do not meet the exact requirements outlined here, we encourage you to explain in a cover letter why you’d be uniquely suited to this role despite that.

Help us ignite the next era of science.

What You’ll Do

  • Outreach to and engagement with journalists about SciLine’s mission of getting more evidence-based scientific research and expertise into news coverage, with a focus on local newsrooms and emerging audiences, including independent content creators and Spanish-language media.
  • Public speaking on topics related to the role scientific expertise and evidence can play in enhancing local journalism.
  • Helping SciLine develop a partnership and stakeholder engagement strategy, and representing SciLine at journalism industry events and in conversations with collaborators and partner organizations.
  • Learning about the knowledge, skill sets, and topical needs of a diverse landscape of local journalists and content creators and helping leaders of SciLine’s program areas best meet them.
  • Being cross-trained in delivery of SciLine’s main services and serving as occasional backup for colleagues working in those areas, including helping run occasional training sessions for local journalists on how to access, understand, and incorporate more evidence-based scientific research and expertise into their work.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years of professional experience and training.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working in local journalism or with reporters.
  • Experience working on science topics or with scientific experts preferred; enthusiasm about and interest in science a must.
  • Up-to-date familiarity with social media platforms and the independent publishing and content creator ecosystem.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
