Job Description

Vermonters rely on clear, trustworthy reporting to understand the health care systems that affect their lives — from rising insurance premiums and hospital closures to Statehouse policy debates and public health crises. VTDigger is seeking a sharp, curious, and experienced Health Care Reporter to cover one of the most critical and complex beats in the state.

This reporter will help readers make sense of fast-changing developments in hospital and health system budgets, state and federal policy, public health, medical research, insurance and the social determinants of health. With Vermont’s hospitals and insurers facing growing financial instability, this beat demands a reporter who can produce high-impact stories that inform, engage and hold powerful interests accountable.

The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to explain complicated issues clearly and compellingly, break news, develop strong sourcing and write with both precision and humanity. The Health Care Reporter will file 3–4 stories each week that deepen Vermonters’ understanding of the policies and systems that shape their health and well-being.

We welcome candidates who are not only strong reporters and writers, but who are also interested in creative ways to tell stories — whether through data visualizations, multimedia, newsletters, or other methodologies.
