Description
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University seeks an experienced and innovative professional to teach and lead undergraduate and graduate students in immersive media production, multimedia and other Cronkite courses.
This role combines editorial leadership, mentorship and teaching, ensuring students develop professional-level skills in multimedia storytelling while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and thoroughness. The professor will lead the Cronkite School's New Media Innovation Lab, a course dedicated to producing innovative immersive storytelling that advances community and audience impact, where they will proactively guide students in storytelling across AR, VR, XR, games, 360 imagery and other interactive media products, and provide back-end production and technology support; current knowledge of related tools, technology and approaches is required.
The professor will teach other video, production and multimedia courses, developing a pipeline to advanced learning experiences. Success in this role is measured by the success of students, and their ability to synthesize skills and knowledge from earlier courses inside a working media production environment.
The successful candidate will be an immersive storyteller of the highest caliber, a creative thinker who is comfortable in a highly energized environment, and a student-first instructor inspired by the future of media. The candidate demonstrates a commitment to accuracy, fairness and collaboration; possesses the skills to inspire, support and instruct students; and instinctively delivers clear direction and feedback.
As a member of the faculty, the professor will have teaching and service responsibilities with the Cronkite School. In this role, there are no research or creative activity responsibilities.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 9-month appointment with a faculty rank based on qualifications and experience; it is a year-to-year appointment, not a tenure-track appointment. The role is based on Arizona State University's Downtown Phoenix campus, and all instruction is in person.
Essential Responsibilities
• Lead, edit, teach and mentor a team of upper-level undergraduate and graduate journalism students in immersive media projects, such as AR, VR, XR, 360 imagery and other interactive media approaches
• Teach lower-, upper- and graduate-division courses in media skills
• Collaborate with faculty and staff within the school and across the university to activate virtual production spaces and tell impactful stories
• Serve as an immersive media thought leader, surfacing industry insights and best-in-class examples
• Foster a culture of innovation by harnessing fresh ideas and experimenting with new tools, technologies and techniques that enhance storytelling
• Collaborate with other newsroom faculty, students and staff
• Perform service both internally (e.g., committee assignments, student recruitment) and externally (e.g. professional workshops, contest judging)
• Perform other duties as assigned
