Job Description

Managing Editor, VTDigger

In the 15 years since it was founded, VTDigger has become Vermont’s essential source of news and investigation — and a model for sustainable, nonprofit journalism across the country. Now, it’s looking for an accomplished journalist and manager to lead its newsroom to new heights.

As managing editor of VTDigger, you will work with the editor-in-chief and CEO to deliver on its mission of producing rigorous journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability and fosters democratic and civic engagement. You will bring to the position a dedication to serving readers, experience inspiring and coaching teams, an eye toward innovation and a commitment to journalistic excellence.

Your primary responsibility will be to run the newsroom on a day-to-day basis — directly supervising senior editors and overseeing a team of close to two dozen journalists. You will map out daily coverage, plan for time-intensive investigations and respond nimbly to breaking-news events. You’ll ensure that stories are pitched and assigned, edited to VTDigger’s standards and presented in a manner that engages readers.

As a member of VTDigger’s leadership team, you’ll contribute to all aspects of the organization, including its budget, hiring, personnel matters and labor relations. You must be committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive organization and improving culture and communication.

Compensation & Benefits: The salary range for this full-time role is $80,000 to $90,000 annually (commensurate with experience). We offer industry-leading benefits in a positive and flexible work culture. These include 5+ weeks of paid time off plus holidays, parental leave, generous employer contribution to medical insurance, available group vision and dental insurance, and employer-provided EAP, life & disability insurance. We offer a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution.

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter and complete this online form for consideration. See the full job description here. The deadline to apply is May 30, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

We encourage members of communities that are traditionally underrepresented and misrepresented in the media to apply to join our team, including those who are Black, Indigenous or people of color; women; LGBTQ+ people; and people with disabilities.
