Job Description

The School of Communication and Media and the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies at Montclair State University invites applications for a clinical specialist (non-tenure track teaching professor) in Spanish Language Journalism. This position will support the University’s commitment to preparing students for professional journalism careers serving Hispanic and Spanish speaking communities. This interdisciplinary faculty member will be housed both in the School of Communication and Media’s journalism program and the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, helping to lead and grow a collaborative new certificate program in Spanish Language Journalism. Teaching assignments will include courses from both units, including Reportando las Noticias, a newly created Spanish language newscast course (Montclair NewsLab en Español) which will produce news broadcasts for distribution on the University’s Hawk+ streaming platform, and possible courses in Hispanic culture based on the candidate’s area of expertise. This may include coursework related to the candidate’s cultural experiences as a professional journalist. Candidates should have a strong professional work history in Spanish language journalism. Of particular interest are candidates who have professional experience in Spanish language television and broadcast news and are excited for the future of this evolving discipline. Candidates must be fluent (both oral and written) in Spanish. Faculty are expected to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular life of the University, including support for student news broadcasts and campus events. This faculty member will have the unique opportunity to continue to leverage and grow the University’s partnerships with a range of news organizations that serve a diverse public, including membership in the NBCU Academy program, a partnership with WNBC/WNJU, and recruiting and content partnerships with a broad range of local and national news organizations. This is a 10-month, renewable position.

Job Requirements

Significant professional experience as a professional Spanish language journalist in broadcast or digital journalism. Experience as a producer is appreciated (or eagerness to grow in that capacity). Must be fluent in oral and written English and Spanish. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree (ideally in either journalism/communication or Spanish) and previous college teaching experience.
