Company Description:

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking a creative and entrepreneurial senior editor to edit stories that will change how readers see the world. The editor will be expected to generate story ideas, guide writers through the reporting and writing process, and ensure that the resulting stories have depth, integrity, and style. This person will need impeccable editorial judgment and devotion to the craft of writing. We will consider candidates based remotely, outside of our preferred New York City or Washington, DC office locations.

Qualifications:

Significant experience assigning and editing major feature stories, including narratives, profiles, and argued essays

Editorial imagination and force of intellect; an eye for original ideas

Large and varied network of writers, scholars, and other potential contributors

A demonstrable record of publishing writers of diverse backgrounds

Ability to guide, coach, and cajole writers to do their best work

A knack for display copy and other elements of magazine packaging and web publishing

Key responsibilities:

Assigning and editing feature stories for both the print magazine and the website

Working closely with both staff writers and freelancers; expanding our network of contributors

Helping to ensure that our coverage is thoughtful, heterodox, and maximally ambitious

Shepherding pieces through copyedit and fact-checking; working with teams across the newsroom to enhance the presentation of stories

Guiding and mentoring more junior editors; offering suggestions and ideas to colleagues across the newsroom
