Company Description:

North Country Public Radio is seeking a creative, ambitious, and talented reporter to join our award-winning, nationally recognized news team. You’ll be responsible for covering the city of Plattsburgh and the Champlain Valley, a vibrant and beautiful region that includes two mountain ranges, the “sixth Great Lake”, rolling hills and farmland. You’ll be a “bureau of one”, based in Plattsburgh, working remotely with the rest of the news team.

NCPR covers critical issues facing our communities, including criminal justice and prison reform, policing, border and immigration, economic development, rural health care, agriculture, climate change, native issues, and much more.

We tell the stories of the people who live in our region in eye- and ear-catching ways, challenging our assumptions and nurturing our curiosity. We dig deep and seek out the voices of people who haven’t been heard from a range of diverse backgrounds.

We’re looking for a general assignment reporter – enterprising and self-motivated, able to work on their own, and with a team. You’ll also get a chance to establish a “mini-beat” to dig deeper. We encourage all of our reporters to file national stories with NPR and other public media outlets.

You’ll produce news stories for broadcast, digital, and social media platforms that serve the mission of the news department to provide coverage of issues of regional importance. You’ll work closely with editors and fellow reporters to help your work shine, and you’ll collaborate with the rest of the news team on special projects and investigative journalism.

NCPR is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. We believe our work benefits from a range of perspectives and backgrounds. Becoming more diverse at all levels of our organization is the right thing to do, and makes us stronger. We strongly encourage women, people of color, people with disabilities, people from diverse economic backgrounds, and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

Headquartered at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, NCPR is in a beautiful part of the country, including Lake Champlain, the Adirondack Mountains, the St. Lawrence River, Fort Drum Army base, Akwesasne Mohawk territory, and nearby urban areas in Burlington, Vermont, and Ottawa and Montreal, Canada.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 1-3 years regular reporting experience
  • Strong background in journalism for radio and digital platforms
  • Excellent writing skills for broadcast and web
  • Ability to work various hours, including nights and weekends, depending on assignment
  • Driver’s license and vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in public radio
  • Ability to record and gather high-quality audio in the field
  • Ability to use audio editing systems, such as Adobe Audition
  • Expertise in multi-media skills, including photography, visual journalism, data-based reporting, social media engagement, etc.

Interested applicants must apply online at http://employment.stlawu.edu uploading all required materials which are defined in the “special instructions to applicant” section.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the finalist successfully passing a background (including criminal records) check.
