The Job

You are a political junkie, a policy wonk, a voracious news consumer on any and every platform.  You are an aggressive, relentless journalist – tracking every incremental development in a story, nosing out new reporting angles, and framing stories in a fresh, edgy way.  You skate to where the puck is going, but you also watch where everyone’s moving, and then go where they aren’t.  You are our Supervising Editor.

The Supervising Editor will be responsible for keeping the DC desk and newsgathering operation not only up-to-speed, but one step ahead, partnering with Beat Leaders and reporters to keep pushing forward the exclusive, in-depth reporting that is a CNN hallmark, and setting the table for the day ahead.  This linchpin position will cover nightside hours, working in close coordination with the network's National and Digital News desks, to ensure CNN's multi-platform reporting efforts are accurate, urgent, and presented with clarity and context.

The role requires rapid response to breaking news, assigning reporting and resources in coordination with regional and national news editors, and strong copy-editing skills.

The Daily

• Oversee developments in both active reporting and emerging stories across the evening hours, ensuring CNN is as competitive at night as during the day

• Provide leadership to prime-time cable shows to ensure they track up-to-the-minute developments and reporter assignments 

• Edit and disseminate news alerts on tight deadlines 

• Collaborate with bureau managers, planning producers, and desk editors on staffing or camera deployments overnight for a competitive next-day posture 

• Provide direction to nightside desk editors and reporters 

• Update senior DC newsgathering leaders on an ongoing basis

The Essentials

• Must have impeccable written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

• Must be able to quickly and efficiently write clear, tight news alerts for internal and external audiences. 

• Must possess 7+ years’ experience in cable, national or major media markets, with experience supervising the creation and editing of daily news content for digital platforms preferred.
  Must be passionate and competitive about political and Washington news.

• Must demonstrate outstanding news judgment, sharp story-editing skills, and a reflex of looking ahead for what's new and next.

• Must maintain a flexible, problem-solving mentality.
