Searchlight New Mexico is looking for an experienced investigative journalist who thrives on deadline but also knows how to stretch out and write a great narrative long-form story. We want a self-directed reporter with chops - someone who knows how to find a great story, understands the world of data-driven journalism, but is still willing to wear out the soles of her/his shoes doing old-fashioned reporting. A great writer who loves to talk to people, knows a great quote when s/he hears one, and is ever alert to rich details. This is a job that demands juggling. We expect our reporters to take 3 or more months to report and write a major investigative story, while simultaneously filing meaningful pieces on a monthly basis. Searchlight is a mission-driven, nonprofit investigative news organization based in Santa Fe, but focused around serious issues throughout the entire state of New Mexico. We offer a competitive salary in an age of shrinking journalism. If you’re someone who can write powerful impactful stories - and get them in on time - we want to hear from you.
