Job Description:

The Connecticut Mirror (www.CTMirror.org) is a nonprofit, non-partisan local online journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals. We cover public policy, government and politics in Connecticut. Our 27-person full-time staff includes 22 journalists and five business team members. Four journalism positions have been added just this year.
This beat will be an integral part of our broader policy coverage, which includes justice, human services, health care, the state budget, the environment, and housing, among other topics, and will require a mix of daily news coverage and deeper-dive enterprise stories on substantive policy and human-interest issues — especially those that would otherwise go untold. We are particularly interested in stories that hold government accountable and expose systemic problems. The reporter will also write a regular newsletter, every other week, highlighting and explaining the latest news for our readers who are interested in K-12 education.
This reporter will need to build sources within state and local education systems — including parents, students, teachers, administrators, local and state officials, researchers and advocates — and will work collaboratively with other staff reporters to cover the intersection of K-12 education with other coverage areas, such as health, state finance and justice. During Connecticut’s annual state legislative session, the reporter will be responsible for tracking bills and writing stories about proposed legislation that impacts the people, state agencies and service providers for school-age children and their families.
The successful candidate will be able to make meaningful connections between the role of government and the challenges children and families face in educational systems. We are looking for candidates who can write clearly, translate jargon and use narrative and other techniques to engage readers. Experience with multiple platforms, including newsletters, video, audio and other story forms, is preferred.

Job Requirements:

This position will be based in our Hartford, Conn., newsroom. We strongly encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Here’s our commitment to the candidate whom we hire:You’ll work hard because we’re serious about our mission, but you’ll laugh plenty along the way because we can’t always be serious!
