Job Description:

Freelance Reporters--Pitch Us Your Stories

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and report unique stories on some of the biggest issues of our time, from voting rights/election security to race and inequality, policing, climate change, immigration, COVID-19, creeping authoritarianism and more?

How would you like to get paid on time, get published quickly on a respected, independent news platform, and have a positive experience in being edited?

Whowhatwhy is looking for stories on many topics. Send your ideas to storyideas@whowhatwhy.org) and include a detailed pitch that provides a clear thesis for your article, indicates how much research you have done, and characterizes the range of sources you plan to use. Also include links to comparable articles you have written, plus biographical information that demonstrates your qualifications and expertise.

We are open not only to individual submissions but to developing relationships with freelancers that would lead to regular assignments. The pay is modest, but you’ll gain experience and national exposure, while producing stories that can make a difference.

Our aim is to cover the stories and angles that the bigger outfits sometimes miss or even deliberately ignore. Also, we’re a nonprofit. But we’re different from other nonprofit news outfits — because we work extra hard to steer clear of the pack and challenge consensus thinking or conventional wisdom.

Mentor Apprentice Program

If you have less experience but are a good writer who wants to become a better writer, or is looking to build a portfolio of clips, you are invited to apply for our Mentor Apprentice Program. This is an unpaid virtual internship in which you are paired with seasoned editors. Stories you produce that meet our rigorous standards will be published under your byline.   (To apply for the apprentice program, contact hr@whowhatwhy.org).
