The News Officer reports to the Associate Director of News and covers assigned ‘beats’ (including but not limited to the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, Penn First Plus, Civic House, Greenfield Intercultural Center, South Asia Studies + Centers, East Asian Language and Civilizations + Centers, Gender Women and Gender Studies + the Women’s Center, and Languages) with a minimum of supervision and on a regular basis, the News Officer works with programs, faculty and staff to research, report and write news releases, feature stories and pitches for national, regional, local media and campus print, electronic and multi-media news formats.
The mission of the President’s Center is to support the President, the trustees, and the University’s senior leadership; advance Penn’s highest priorities; to aid the faculty, students, and staff in their teaching, research, and service activities; and to advance excellence at Penn. A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Superb reporting and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to gather, research and write news professionally; knowledge of news media operations and the ability to communicate with the wide range of personalities in the media; ability to work well with faculty and administration and interpret academic subjects to lay audiences;
A working knowledge of social media and multimedia.
Experience in dealing with major national and international media and a solid understanding of and commitment to the highest professional public relations standards;
A commitment to work within the University’s established organizational structure;
A commitment to independent higher education in general and to the University of Pennsylvania in particular.
