Job Description

The Connecticut Mirror (www.CTMirror.org) is a local, independent, nonprofit digital journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals.

Our mission is to produce original, in-depth, nonpartisan journalism that informs Connecticut residents about the impact of public policy, holds government accountable, and amplifies diverse voices and perspectives.

We have an immediate opening for a full-time editor to work in conjunction with the managing editor to perform day-to-day editing and staff management functions. This editor will be responsible for story editing (origination, development, word editing), with a particular emphasis on project management of longer enterprise work, and will be tasked with helping the executive editor develop and manage a fellowship program for aspiring journalists.

A big part of this job will be helping to develop and support young reporters, both on the staff and in the fellowship program, so we are seeking someone who will embrace the role of teacher and mentor in the newsroom, as well as model the highest standards of quality journalism for all our reporters.

The right candidate will have strong editing and interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, ample patience, and a desire to help build and support a stronger, more diverse staff as the organization continues to grow. Experience with project management, investigative reporting, and/or data analysis would be a plus.

The successful candidate will also embrace CT Mirror’s public policy mission and highly collaborative, nonprofit operating model.

If you think this job is for you, but you don’t have all the required skills listed below please apply anyway.

This editor will report to Executive Editor Elizabeth Hamilton. The position will be based in our Hartford, CT newsroom.  Diverse candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience, a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, a generous paid time off policy, and a 403(b) deferred retirement savings and matching plan.

Job Requirements

  • Strong editing skills.
  • Working knowledge of economic development and state budget process, politics, and public policy related to health care, housing, education, criminal justice, and the environment.
  • At least 5 years of digital journalism and editing experience at a daily news organization, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
  • Bachelor of Arts degree or higher.
