It’s an exciting time to be part of the BBC News team in North America. We are expanding and we want you to help us improve our coverage of the US and Canada and reach new audiences in the region and globally.
The size of the digital team across Washington, New York, LA and Toronto is more than doubling to 40 journalists. There will be more writers, editors and specialist reporters as well as new hubs focused on production, visual journalism and growing our audience.
The BBC wants to provide the best breaking news coverage of major events as well as more original reporting and innovative digital storytelling. Our readers want a richer global perspective on both US and international news.
We are seeking a creative data journalist who enjoys collaborating with others to join our news team in the US.

A data journalist will embrace data journalism, fact-checking, and a range of other explanatory and analytical forms of journalism working collaboratively with other journalists and editors to enhance our digital coverage of North America for a global audience coming to our website (BBC.com/news) and app.
You will be need to be a self-starter brimming with original ideas on how to find and tell stories using data. You will be eager to find ways to complement news stories, when appropriate, or to identify original stories that can be carried across BBC outlets. You will be able to delve beneath headline figures and then confidently and succinctly explain the fuller picture to our audiences as well as other colleagues from BBC News.
You will be excited about developing the way that data is interpreted and presented online via desktop, tablet and mobile and work closely and productively with journalists from across BBC News, as well as with web developers and designers, to achieve the very best award-winning data journalism.
You will need to be able to work to tight and demanding deadlines. You will be focused on creating content that will engage our North American and global audiences, providing them with useful, and where possible, personalised information.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate must have:
An understanding of statistics and statistical analysis
Ability to clean, parse and query data
Demonstrable experience of finding news stories using data, demonstrable experience of visualising data
Demonstrable experience of working to tight deadlines
Good knowledge of software used for data analysis
Knowledge of some of the following: R, Excel, Flourish, QGIS and Python
Experience of gathering information from Freedom of Information requests
Track-record of bringing long-term journalistic projects to fruition
A commitment to delivering accurate and impartial journalism
