Job Description

Job Introduction

It’s an exciting time to be part of the BBC News team in North America. We are expanding and we want you to help us improve our coverage of the US and Canada and reach new audiences in the region and globally.

The size of the digital team across Washington, New York, LA and Toronto is more than doubling to 40 journalists. There will be more writers, editors and specialist reporters as well as new hubs focused on production, visual journalism and growing our audience.

The BBC wants to provide the best breaking news coverage of major events as well as more original reporting and innovative digital storytelling. Our readers want a richer global perspective on both US and international news.

We are seeking digitally-savvy online reporters with excellent writing skills to join our news team in the US. Our main bureau is in Washington DC but we'd consider also basing one of these new roles in our newsrooms in New York, Los Angeles or Miami.

Role Responsibility

A Digital Reporter at the Journalist grade on the News team in the US will produce digital coverage of North America for a global audience coming to our website (BBC.com/news) and app. You will be expected to write sharp news stories - with rigour, context and flair. Tasks could range from jumping on breaking news to chasing leads and interviews to move a story on to researching and writing a sidebar story. There will also be opportunities to also write news features with narratives built around original reporting and compelling characters.

Journalists will monitor social media, search trends and audience data and use that to improve our storytelling and help us reach new audiences. Journalists will be expected to contribute ideas in editorial meetings around the most useful and creative approaches to our big stories, including the best formats and visual treatments.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

  • Recent experience of writing accurate, engaging and fast-paced news for digital audiences
  • A track record of generating original ideas and chasing leads to produce impactful stories
  • Experience of covering the US and/or international news agenda, and an interest in connecting the dots between events and trends in North America and what’s happening in the rest of the world
  • Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve story telling and broaden coverage
  • The ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences
  • A commitment to delivering accurate and impartial journalism

Deadline for applications is July 3. Please note this is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

BBC News is committed to creating a more diverse, inclusive and agile organisation that responds quickly to changing audience needs, provides you with exceptional career opportunities, and strengthens our position as a world-leading source of trusted and impartial news.
