Job Description

Be part of an award-winning team that covers the world from a unique perspective: through the mission, ministries and religious life of Catholic sisters.

Global Sisters Report is looking for a full-time bilingual (English/Spanish) editor to help head up our international coverage. The position reports to the Global Sisters Report editor and works with other editors and members of the GSR team, plus editors and staffers at National Catholic Reporter on occasion, to fulfill GSR's mission to be "a dynamic online community that reports on and gives voice to women religious around the world."

We are looking for an editor with at least five years' experience to work with writers in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe for whom English is often a second or third language. This editor would be integral to our Spanish-language edition, an exciting new project that will begin publication this fall.

The GSR international editor would be expected to:
  • Work with staff and freelance reporters to develop and shape enterprise stories and projects as well as oversee art, graphic and multimedia content to accompany the stories. Editing of U.S. content would be required on occasion.
  • Suggest and help develop long-term staff reporting projects that examine how Catholic sisters are at the forefront of helping those at the margins worldwide.
  • Edit several stories a month in English and Spanish, including breaking news and long-form features. This includes a rigorous fact-check on each piece as well as organizing photos/captions and any other multimedia elements to accompany a story, including video, maps and interactive timelines.
  • Manage teams of writers globally, including setting deadlines, handling payments, and communicating regularly with the writers and other editors regarding the status of stories.
  • Attend an editors' meeting and a staff meeting via Zoom each week, in addition to quarterly meetings with international correspondents and any other meetings as necessary.
  • Regularly and quickly respond to emails from inside and outside of the organization and to Slack messages from colleagues. Collaborate with NCR and EarthBeat editors and reporters on stories that are of interest to a wider Catholic audience and an audience interested in environmental reporting, respectively.
The ideal candidate has these qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in journalism, communications, or another applicable field.
  • Five years of experience in editorial leadership and experience editing and managing many writers at one time.
  • A history of working with writers for whom English is a second language.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church, especially Catholic social teaching, and familiarity with the roles and background of Catholic sisters.
  • Experience as an assigning editor on a variety of story forms, including breaking news, profiles, investigations and interactive formats.
  • Expertise in Slack and Google Workspace. Familiarity with Drupal or other content-management systems as well as AP style and Catholic News Service style.
  • A home base and an openness to pre-approved travel. (Although GSR is based in Kansas City, Missouri, relocation is not a requirement.)
Global Sisters Report, which began in 2014, has become an authoritative publication about Catholic sisters. It is a project of National Catholic Reporter, which was established in 1964 as an independent, lay-led publication focusing on the Catholic Church. More information about Global Sisters Report can be found here.

Please send a cover letter, resume, samples of stories you've edited (before/after preferred) and series / projects you've overseen, along with references to jobs@ncronline.org.

This position carries full benefits and salary commensurate with experience. All communications will be treated confidentially. The deadline to submit application materials is June 29, 2022, and materials will be reviewed as they are received.
