Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB 
The Copywriter, under the direction of the Director of Communications and in collaboration with team members, helps draft Commission messaging for internal and external audiences in line with the agency’s branding, media relations, and external affairs strategies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, Commissioners, senior staff, and the Communications team, draft and edit copy, supporting projects from concept development to final production, for use in press activity, public speaking opportunities, policy materials, marketing, social media, website content, reports, and more.
  • Utilizing strong writing and research skills, be responsible for producing engaging, error-free content that conveys complex policy matters in clear, accessible language in accordance with agency voice, brand, and style.
  • Help manage and update agency talking points for internal and external use.
  • Working with the Press Secretary, help draft and edit press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and other external communications.
  • Brainstorm and develop marketing copy that promotes agency programming such as the first-in-the-nation statewide Social Equity Program and award-winning “More About Marijuana” public awareness campaign.
  • In collaboration with the Digital Media Director, write original and edit existing social media posts utilizing search and social ad content writing skills.
  • In collaboration with the Digital Media Director, help draft and copyedit web content, with strong attention to SEO best practices and page content optimization.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, develop content that supports Commissioners and staff with opportunities, including but not limited to, speeches or panel discussions, legislative testimony, public presentations, and more.
  • Help review cross-department materials for consistency with Commission voice, branding, and style, including but not limited to regulatory guidance documents, FAQs, reports, and other tools critical to implementing marijuana laws in Massachusetts.
  • Support the development of internal communication materials in collaboration with Communications, Operations, and Human Resources staff.
 
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain the highest standards of personal, professional, and ethical conduct and support the Commission’s goals for a diverse and culturally aware workforce;
  • Support the work of the Communications team, Executive Director, and Commissioners to ensure consistent, on-brand messaging throughout integrated communication channels.
  • Attend public meetings, hearings, and/or other speaking engagements that directly impact the Commission’s communication, marketing, and outreach efforts, and report out as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Excellent communicator with strong writing skills and comfort following standard writing guides.
  • Knowledge of the Commission’s mission, standards, and goals.
  • Sound project management and proofreading skills, with sharp attention to detail.
  • Previous experience utilizing content management systems, including Wordpress; social media and content marketing experience a plus.
  • Solid organizational habits, proficient at managing multiple projects at the same time.
  • Self-starter with strong interpersonal traits, who is comfortable working independently and with teams to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in and travel to the Commissions offices in Worcester and/or Boston (Currently remote).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education required.
  • 3 to 5 years of professional writing experience working in media, communications, or marketing, with a portfolio that demonstrates past work.
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
