Employment Type: Full time
PolitiFact, the country’s largest political fact-checking organization, is looking for an experienced journalist to help us cover immigration. That includes fact-checking claims about immigration, debunking viral misinformation, and writing explainer stories about immigration policy and politics.
We’re looking for a reporter with tenacity, speed and grit, who can reach out to sources, conduct deep research and write with verve and style on a daily basis. PolitiFact has a demonstrated track record of covering immigration issues in depth, and we’re looking for a journalist who can help us continue and deepen that coverage.
As our lead immigration reporter, you will have multiple tasks. You’ll be on the frontlines of debunking misinformation shared online. Some days you’ll be working to see if a photo or video is doctored. Other days you’ll fact-check a TikTok video or an Instagram post. You’ll also be fact-checking claims from cable news and online websites.
This job also has a strong public policy component. It includes fact-checking of 2022 midterm elections when messaging and attacks focus on immigration. You’ll write stories explaining national policy discussions on immigration, from its economic impact, to work visa policy, to border enforcement, to paths to citizenship. This reporter will find and interpret complex immigration data and work to fully explain the nuances of immigration laws.
This reporter must have full professional proficiency in written and spoken Spanish and English. Direct experience covering immigration is ideal. But we’ll strongly consider public policy and government beat reporters who don’t have direct experience covering immigration, but are eager to cover the topic and believe they could quickly get up to speed. We’ll give an edge to candidates who are based in Florida or Washington, D.C., but there is a possibility of remote work for the right candidate.
We are committed to diversity and an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply for this position. PolitiFact has offices in both St. Petersburg, Florida, and Washington, D.C.
PolitiFact won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2008 presidential election and is part of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Our mission is to hold all politicians accountable for the claims they make, and to provide voters nonpartisan, accurate information.
Please send three reporting/writing samples and a letter explaining why you’d be a good fit to firstname.lastname@example.org.
EOE No phone calls, please. Deadline to apply: Feb. 15, 2022 Start date for this position is negotiable.
