The Digital Editor serves as the lead for all digital aspects for two high-profile magazines at the University of Washington: University of Washington Magazine, and the University’s diversity magazine, Viewpoint. These award-winning print/online publications keep alumni, faculty, staff, donors and friends connected to the University through first-rate content, writing, design, art and photography. They also advance the mission of the University and higher education in the state of Washington.
The Digital Editor’s primary role is to maintain and oversee the website that represents those two publications and any digital communications carrying publication content. In addition to overseeing the publications’ web presence, the Digital Editor will also serve as a regular contributor to the print magazines. This content will complement our print publications and provide content in between print editions. The Digital Editor will also coordinate content for our publications’ e-newsletters.
The Digital Editor position involves every aspect of content generation, production, and digital delivery, including developing story ideas; conducting research and interviews; working with key University stakeholders; writing; editing; proofreading; photo research; and working closely with our art director, the magazine team and vendors (freelance writers, photographers, videographers, video editors, web developers, etc.) to produce content for both print and digital publication.
The Digital Editor will work most closely with the Alumni & Stakeholder Engagement staff in publications, marketing and communications, and information technology, as well as outside contributors. The Digital Editor must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively, meet deadlines and exercise discretion, creativity and editorial judgment. Moreover, they must be able to integrate differing sources of information and work with a range of diverse audiences and constituents including students, faculty, alumni, major donors, alumni trustees, university officials, regents and community leaders.
Digital Content Development and Implementation
Create and build online content for both magazines
• Produce and oversee all digital magazine content in the form of written articles and visual content, plus accompanying videos, audio interviews, slide shows and links to other content of interest to our audience. • Work with publications team to identify and produce digital content that can enhance the print publications and provide new content on the magazine website in addition to the print publication cycle. • Ensure that the online versions of both magazines complement and expand upon the print versions, encourage feedback and appeal to a broad range of alumni demographics.
Website Performance and Maintenance
• Serve as a copy editor for online and print content. Perform regular editing, proofreading and rewriting on deadline. • Work with UWAA’s marketing and communications team to: • Ensure the stability and performance of University of Washington Magazine web servers, ensuring uptime and optimum performance. • Maintain our team’s WordPress content-management system, maintaining our WordPress installation, and ensure that secure web practices are followed by all members of the University of Washington publications team. • Develop new features and plug-ins to enhance delivery of magazine content. • Solicit users of University of Washington Magazine digital properties to improve our ability to provide engaging digital content. • Create and execute a comprehensive user testing and ongoing feedback system for all University of Washington Magazine. • Utilize our Google Analytics account to gauge property performance. • Utilize Google Analytics to gauge page performance, including Dashboard/report creation, funnels, content-flow analysis, and technical delivery.
Develop and execute the social media strategy for magazine content
• Lead the creation of editorial calendars for digital content for both magazines. Work with UW Alumni Association Marketing & Communications team to amplify magazine content on UWAA’s social media channels and channels across UW. • Work with the Marketing and Communications team to develop and execute the communications strategy for magazine content across UWAA and UW communications channels. • Work closely with rest of the editorial team, art director and printing company to solve technical or content issues in a timely manner. • Become familiar with all aspects of administrative duties, such as budget management, paying invoices, obtaining mail lists, communicating with printing company, etc.
• Creatively and independently write and create content that tells the University’s story in an engaging manner. • Interview leading authorities on story topics, including top faculty, students, alumni, donors, community leaders and friends of the University. • Collaborate with UWAA and UW colleagues on the development of story ideas and the best ways to present material online and in our print publications. • Work with other University units as necessary to provide and produce content for alumni and University audiences, considering institutional goals, reader interests, journalistic standards and current events. • Independently conduct research on topics using all sources available inside and outside the institution. This could include, but is not limited to, interviews, web, print and the University’s Advance database system. • Ensure that all articles are accurate and factual, and obtain story approval from appropriate sources. • Ensure that the University’s and UW Alumni Association’s branding is reflected in all aspects of our online and print publications.
• Hire and manage freelance videographers, photographers, writers, audio reporters and web developers as necessary. • Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field and three to four years’ experience of progressively responsible experience in editorial fields, publications and marketing.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
• Experience in online content production and delivery, magazine writing and editing. • Proficiency in CMS and digital page production software, desktop publishing, Google and Adobe analytics, HTML. Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel preferred. • Knowledge of the creative development process. • Ability and commitment to managing, developing, mentoring and coaching staff and colleagues. • Proficiency using Apple computers. Demonstrated strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc. • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud products, including but not limited to, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, InCopy and InDesign. • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service. • Advanced Degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Creative Writing and/or related field of study • Previous work experience in higher-education communications, journalism, creative writing, university advancement, higher education alumni relations, marketing/communication and/or related field • Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles • Work experience in Interactive Design, UX, and front-end web development
