Job Description

Are you ready to jump start your career in investigative journalism? The Scripps Howard Foundation offers a 12-month fellowship program in conjunction with the Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy and The Texas Tribune. Starting in June, fellows will work at either Scripps News Washington Bureau/Newsy or The Texas Tribune, focusing on developing expertise in one specialty, while being exposed to all the components of the newsroom.

The deadline is Dec. 19, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. EST. No exceptions.

The Fellowship has four tracks:

Investigative Reporting for Video (At Scripps/Newsy): Journalism is still about telling people something they didn’t know. Having the skills to find that information and synthesize into a compelling story is as crucial as ever. You’ll work with some of the best investigative journalists in the business to find important accountability stories. Your primary outlet will be broadcast, with a focus on visually immersive, documentary style video production and narrative storytelling like what is found in this piece and this one.

Data Reporting (At Scripps/Newsy): Our data team has been instrumental in bringing important investigative stories forward and spurring changes in communities and in agencies at the local, state and federal level. You’ll be part of a team that helps develop and vet story ideas and adds the power of data to all our reporting. As a key member of the data team, you’ll work with the entire newsroom in collecting, cleaning, evaluating and analyzing data – as well as turning that data into stories -- and get practice using tools like QGIS, Google Earth, and Excel, and programming languages like R, Python, and SQL. You will also learn how to factcheck and bullet proof our data to ensure accuracy.

Multimedia Reporter (At The Texas Tribune): A multimedia reporter would work closely with the Texas Tribune’s multimedia team and reporters to produce documentary-style stories about the most important issues facing Texas. This person would get involved in every aspect of multimedia production, from planning and pitching original ideas to camerawork in the field to editing and post-production. Ideal candidates have experience in these areas along with a strong interest in policy-focused journalism and multimedia storytelling. Expertise in Adobe Premiere and Spanish language skills a plus.

Data Visuals (At The Texas Tribune): This staff member would work on audience-focused data stories that contextualize the rapidly changing state of Texas for readers. This person would be a key member of the data visuals team, working closely with other developers and reporters to tell creative visual stories. Ideal candidates demonstrate experience with data reporting and performing analysis with tools such as Python or R and/or creating graphics with JavaScript or Adobe Illustrator. They are passionate about web standards, willing to discuss and show their code, and deeply interested in politics, policy and open government.
