Job Description

When news of a mass shooting breaks, can you verify the facts and still get the story out before the competition?

When a hurricane hits, can you find a compelling character whose personal experience brings the story to life?

When the Supreme Court makes a historic ruling, can you explain the process and the politics to a global audience?

Are you curious about the cultural trends and conversations happening beyond the traditional news agenda?

Do you know your CrowdTangle from your Chartbeat, and understand how to use data to find stories, increase engagement and reach new audiences?

If you can do all of these things - and more - we want to hear from you.

Role Responsibility

You will produce digital coverage of North America for a global audience coming to our website (BBC.com/news) and app.

You will write and produce fluent and engaging copy, often to tight deadlines, and integrate images, video and graphics to ensure your story makes the highest possible visual impact.

With a strong news sense and editorial skills, you will be able to spot a story that fits the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, and to chase reaction, confirm facts and develop new angles.

In the fast-moving world of digital journalism, you will have creative ideas about improving the BBC’s live coverage of breaking stories, and how we can use social media both as a source for news and as a tool to broaden and engage our audience.

You will also help broaden the kind of stories that the BBC tells, using the latest tools to identify trending topics and social conversations before they go viral.

Based in Washington, DC, you will be expected to have a wide-ranging knowledge of US and international affairs. And have an interest in connecting the dots between events and trends in North America and the rest of the world.

Job Requirements

To be considered for this role you will need to have excellent writing skills and proven editorial judgement, in line with the BBC’s reputation for accurate and impartial reporting.  You will also have a track record of producing high-impact original journalism, in text and video.

With experience of working as a Journalist, you will have the talent and energy to inspire others, as well as an ability to troubleshoot and work calmly under pressure.

You will require the ability to join up the diplomatic dots on US and global affairs and reflect the differing perspectives of North American and international audiences.  With a deep understanding of the US and Canada - and what makes the BBC’s journalism distinct in this market - you will have fresh ideas about how to tackle big issues, combining smart analysis with compelling human stories.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a digitally-savvy journalist with experience in journalism as well as a passion for finding original stories in the US and telling them in a creative way.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US.
