Job Description

About us

The Fuller Project is the global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking journalism about women to raise awareness, expose injustice, and spur accountability. Our vision is journalism that fully represents all women, giving readers The Full Story, and spurring gender equality.

Our reporters in the US and around the globe rigorously report on untold stories and the interconnected issues affecting women and their communities everywhere. Our reporting often leads the news cycle and is published in prominent outlets, bringing the full story to a large and diverse audience.

Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles and reached millions of readers. In 2020 alone, we reported on stories such as: a series on childcare issues affecting working mothers during Covid-19, the pandemic exacerbating the crisis in Black maternal mortality in Wisconsin, intimate partner violence faced by Indigenous communities and compounding systemic barriers to voting, and Black women mobilizing to vote in the recent elections.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Southeastern US-based Enterprise Reporter who has a specialized beat in labor, economics, income-insecurity, immigration, environment or health. Interested candidates should highlight past reporting that shows expertise in the beat and be prepared to pitch us stories and series on day one in their new role they intend to cover.

The reporter should have proven experience reporting on the beat through the lens of gender and intersectionality, with a track record of driving impact and accountability with their reporting. This role will focus on stories in the US, with a specific focus out of the Southeast region. The reporter will report to our Deputy Editor and should be based in a main hub in the Southeastern US as we prefer candidates who are embedded within their local communities and understand how to apply national issues to a local context.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate shares a passion for our mission, has experience working in a newsroom, is deadline-focused and entrepreneurial, sees trends and can identify stories for longer-range coverage, and is constantly asking themselves, “Whose voice is missing from the conversation? What is the historical or systemic context surrounding this issue? How can I go deeper?”  Ideal candidates will also have the following background and skills:

  • Deep understanding of and sourcing in their beat, including landscape, coverage and trends
  • Ability to apply that understanding to women and communities often left out of the mainstream narrative
  • Proven track record of reporting on unheard stories related to their beat, with a focus on driving impact and/or accountability
  • Strong narrative reporter; investigative and/or data reporting experience a plus
  • Ability to deliver both timely (not breaking) and longer-term reporting
  • Deep source network of both experts related to the beat and women from communities affected by the issues in the beat
  • Works well with other reporters and enjoys sharing a byline
  • Willingness to receive and act on feedback and edits
  • Passion for and demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and work independently in a remote environment
  • Ability to work productively in an independent environment, guided by journalism ethics, and in a nonprofit newsroom

This position is based in the Southeast US. We have a preference for Atlanta but we’re open to reporters who want to be based anywhere in the Southeast. We prefer candidates currently living in the region and may consider relocation for qualified candidates who have a track record of reporting in the region. This is a full-time staff role with benefits, including:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • Retirement plan
  • Generous vacation policy, plus flexible and inclusive holiday schedule
  • Phone and communications stipend
  • Technology benefits, such as a company-provided laptop
  • A commitment to an inclusive and diverse work culture
  • Professional learning and development opportunities

How to Apply

If you are interested in the role, please submit three published stories that exemplify your experience reporting on your topic and be prepared to pitch us stories that we haven’t yet covered. In addition, please write a cover letter including your feedback on our work, your specific interest in this role and the connection between your experiences and these responsibilities. If you don't exactly fit the description here or report on a different beat and you think you have a lot to bring to the table, please apply.

The Fuller Project is an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity of all forms in our newsroom. We welcome candidates of all identities to apply.
