Job Description

The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking a passionate, digitally savvy and detail-oriented journalist to line edit essays and letters to the editor and share our opinion journalism on social media. The editor will foster community conversations with intellectual rigor and an open mind.

The ideal candidate is a news junkie who can deftly juggle multiple tasks and platforms for an innovative, collaborative team. You are curious and creative and have strong communication skills, knowledge of AP style and an ability to keep calm on deadline and to build audiences. You care about and can connect with diverse communities. Spanish language skills are a plus.

Our new teammate will also participate in daily editorial board meetings and election endorsements, helping shape our editorial subjects, stands and approaches. Editorial and other writing opportunities are possible, depending on your primary workload, writing ability and desire. U-T employees can work entirely from the office or use a hybrid model, working in the office and from home.

Responsibilities include:

  • Editing commentaries and letters to the editor for accuracy, authoritativeness and AP style
  • Writing headlines and choosing art to accompany essays online and in the newspaper
  • Helping to manage, post and interact on @sdutopinion on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Discussing subjects of the day with The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board
  • Interviewing newsmakers, experts, community leaders, political candidates and others

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of writing, editing or production experience at a professional news outlet
  • Excellent news judgment, a sense of fairness and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational, communication and planning skills
  • Understanding of online audiences, digital trends, SEO and engagement strategy
  • Knowledge of libel laws and adherence to the Union-Tribune’s ethics guidelines
  • Experience working across newsroom disciplines and an inclusive approach in the workplace
