The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is seeking an assistant metro editor to help plan and coordinate aggressive, innovative and balanced local news coverage for our digital and print platforms. This editor will focus on breaking news and will supervise a team of public safety reporters.
This position requires excellent news judgment, plus an ability to do seven things at once and to write headlines that demand to be read. The successful applicant will have a commitment to meaningful local news. We want someone with a strong sense of urgency, as well as depth, fairness and sophistication in developing news coverage. This person must know how to jump-start staff for the big stories and be unflappable under the pressure of breaking news. He or she must have strong planning and editing skills as well as experience in developing enterprise reporting. This editor needs to know how to be a collaborative coach who can help talented reporters do their best work.
Candidates must have: • At least eight years of newsroom experience with an outstanding ability to communicate and to impart excellence in reporting, editing and production on multiple platforms. • The ability to work effectively with colleagues in other departments. • Creativity to encourage and develop a variety of story and presentation ideas. • A commitment to listening to and engaging our audiences.
