Job Description

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced narrative audio journalist to serve as senior editor for The Journal podcast, a collaboration with Gimlet Media. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about journalism and narrative audio editing. In this editorial leadership role, you will guide production from its initial idea to a final, polished episode, working closely with the show’s editors, producers and hosts.

The Journal podcast takes listeners behind the biggest business news stories of the day. We explain how business and finance drive the day’s headlines, using the Wall Street Journal’s deeply reported stories to make business news relatable. The show has covered everything from Covid's origins in China, to the racial reckoning within corporations in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, from the GameStop investing phenomenon to the business of holiday music with Mariah Carey.

We are looking for a senior editor with deep news experience who can guide episode teams to craft engaging and surprising stories and who can take the lead in developing and refining the narrative structure of each episode under tight deadlines.

You will report to the executive editor of The Journal podcast. While you will likely start working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.
To apply, please submit a cover letter clearly outlining how your skills and experience meet or exceed the key candidate requirements, along with links to five work samples that represent the type of work described.

Job Requirements

You will:

  • Edit 1-2 episodes a week of The Journal podcast, preparing for interviews, going through multiple rounds of edits with a host and producer and getting the episode ready on the day of publication

  • Embrace the news cycle and find unique ways to tell business and economics stories on deadline

  • Write collaboratively with producers and hosts to get scripts from draft to final language under tight deadlines

  • Coach producers and hosts to develop new skills

  • Build relationships with WSJ reporters and editors to help them share their stories and reporting in audio format

  • Serve as the primary newsroom point of contact in the executive editor's absence

  • Ensure that all journalistic and legal standards are followed

  • Be able to work late hours and weekends as news developments and production schedules may warrant

You have:

  • At least seven years of audio journalism experience, ideally with a focus on narrative audio

  • At least four years of experience in an editing role

  • An interest in wide-ranging stories, from weighty investigations to lighter topics

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Knowledge of current events, U.S. and world politics and economic and business news

  • A proven knack for managing, mentoring and helping others develop in their careers

  • A track record of working collaboratively and remaining calm under pressure
