Job Description

Confidential is a well-funded digital news startup preparing to launch in Washington, D.C. this fall. Our goal is to create a radically different publication, one that uses a distinct set of formats to deliver a 360-degree view of the most important stories of the day.  We are hiring journalists excited to get in on the ground floor and help us shape our identity.

We are hiring journalists with strong reporting and writing skills who would be excited by the challenge of inventing and continually honing new formats. We want to lay out the who, what, when, etc., and explain the multiple frames through which to understand the bigger picture. We want reporters with subject-area expertise who see the forces animating their beats, how their beats intersect with others, and the political, economic, social, global, and scientific contexts in which the big stories on their beats play out.  We will consider applicants with other professional backgrounds who can show us they have the area-specific expertise and writing skills to do the work.

The Government and Political Institutions Reporter will be responsible for covering how existing shortcomings in the American political system and new attacks on it are posing a profound threat to the future of representative and responsive government in the United States. They should understand how institutions including gerrymandering, the Electoral College, the state-based election of senators, the filibuster and others, bake unequal representation into the American system. They will chronicle and explain the significance of new laws curbing voting access. And they will connect how these systems directly affect the decisions that shape our lives across many dimensions. They will report on possible solutions, incorporating global and historical perspectives.

The Government and Political Institutions Reporter will be a high-energy and opportunistic writer. This person will inundate their editor with pitches, including on big stories of the day that connect to their beat. This reporter must be nimble, as we’ll rely on them to cover other adjacent government, political, and national stories as needed.
