Job Description

From day one at NREL, you’ll connect with coworkers driven by the same mission to save the planet. By joining an organization that values a supportive, inclusive, and flexible work environment, you’ll have the opportunity to engage through our eight employee resource groups, numerous employee-driven clubs, learning and professional development classes.

A Culture of Inclusion & Diversity

Through our commitment to enriching our organization with people of different origins, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of thinking, we are better able to leverage the collective power of our teams and solve the world’s most complex energy challenges. We strive for a culture of trust and respect where everyone contributes their perspectives and authentic selves; reaches their potential as individuals and teams; collaborates to work towards NREL’s overall mission of advancing the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies; and provides the knowledge to integrate and optimize energy systems.

This position will be filled at the Level II or III based on the basic and required qualifications of the selected candidate

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Communications Office has an opening for an experienced Communications Project Coordinator to support complex communication campaigns, projects and events related to buildings and solar technologies. This position may be a great match if…

  • You have strong creative writing skills, an eagle eye for details, and the ability to craft a positive stakeholder experience through print and digital communications

  • You’re passionate about finding creative ways to engage a wide range of stakeholders through multiple channels—especially digital and in-person events and webinars and other outreach strategies

  • You’re at your best when diving into details and thrive when working with a team on event-related communications and multi-year communication campaigns

  • You have previous experience as a communications agency account coordinator (or similar role).

In this Communications Professional II/III position, you will develop and execute multiple, complex communication program plans and events in parallel—tracking budget and deliverables against deadlines for our clients at NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Our team works in an agency-like setting, where you’ll help produce creative content through collaboration with clients, project managers, writers, editors, videographers, web specialists, and graphic designers.

We’ll rely on your help to ensure exceptional, consistent quality and client service, so we’re looking for a self-motivated individual who is familiar with traditional and digital communications, demonstrates attention to detail and quality, delivers creative solutions, and is comfortable interacting directly with research staff and management while building strong working relationships across NREL’s Communications Office.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the main point of contact, project manager, and client representative for competition events and other programs
  • Ensuring accuracy and quality control of all program documents, including program style guide, rules documents, and promotional material with a strong understanding of editing and brand awareness
  • Coordinating content production (e.g., web copy, news articles, videos, press releases, presentation slides, social media posts, and design requests), aligned with brand requirements
  • Writing and editing short-form content (e.g., short-form articles, newsletter blurbs, and social media posts)
  • Helping to create and track multiple timelines and budgets
  • Coordinating virtual events: technical support and acting as a host for webinars, meetings, and workshops
  • Providing pre-event and onsite support for in-person events: working with conference organizers and vendors, preparing collateral material and presentations, scheduling printing and shipping, and arranging invoice payments
  • Coordinating internal Communications Office processes to support project leaders
  • Working closely with multiple teams across NREL and DOE communication offices to secure approvals
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with teams, peers, and clients
  • Informing project managers and team leaders on project status and day-to-day details.
