Job Description

Want to cover America’s most interesting city for one of the nation's best metro newspapers?  The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate is seeking a City Hall reporter to cover the mayor’s office, the City Council, various municipal agencies and the general growth and development of New Orleans. We’re looking for a veteran journalist who can handle a demanding mix of daily beat coverage and long-form enterprise, and who is deeply curious about political power and those who wield it. The ideal candidate would have an extensive background covering politics and elections and a proven track record of using public records and data to find hidden stories. A distinctive writing style is paramount, as is the ability to collaborate. Candidates must also understand the importance of breaking news and leveraging social media.

The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate is a 7-day, home-delivered newspaper with local owners and a veteran staff, many of whom have covered the Crescent City for years. We are passionate about producing thoughtful, complex journalism both in print and on our website NOLA.com, and have been aggressive about growing the organization to reach more subscribers.

In addition to the New Orleans products, our company publishes The Advocate in Baton Rouge and The Acadiana Advocate in Lafayette, as well as their surging digital properties.

This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

As politics reporter you will be responsible for the following:

  • Developing sources on your beat.
  • Using public records and databases to uncover stories.
  • Tracking the money, from government spending to campaign contributions and expenditures.
  • Writing a healthy mix of daily and enterprise stories.
  • Quickly post stories online and developing them further as needed.
  • Using social media tools to develop, distribute and enhance stories.
  • Helping to plan and execute the presentation of stories in a way that maximizes digital impact.
Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate, is committed to recruiting, developing, and promoting a diverse workforce while providing unique opportunities and career paths for our employees.
