Job Description

Reporters

The Times Union in Albany, N.Y., has three openings for reporters interested in covering news and features in New York’s Capital Region. We’re seeking journalists who can break from a highly competitive press pack to produce impactful stories with depth and voice for our Capitol Bureau, Saratoga County and Greene/Columbia County coverage. We want people who can sift through meeting agendas and documents to glean the stories that will drive community conversation — press-release transcriptionists need not apply.

What you'll do:
  • Develop a network of sources across a diverse set of communities.
  • Work the levers of public transparency law to better serve watchdog journalism.
  • Stay ahead of the competition.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom, particularly with our digital team, to maximize the reach of your stories.
  • Meet the needs of a digital-first newsroom with a mix of breaking news and deeper dives.
Who you are:
  • Someone who is community-oriented and wants to engage with all sectors of the population, not just the well-known.
  • A self-starter with great communication skills.
  • Someone who thinks five minutes early is late.
  • Someone with an innate curiosity and healthy skepticism.
  • Someone who can self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
These are full-time, union-covered, positions and will include some weekend and holiday work.

The Times Union is located in New York’s Capital Region. We offer great pay, substantial benefits and the ability to live in a beautiful area of the country.  We are dedicated to being a company where a diverse mix of talented people work. Our commitment to inclusion and multiculturalism is reflected in our content and hiring strategies. All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

Job Requirements

  • A bachelors' degree in journalism, communications, English, or another relevant subject.
  • Proficientcy with basic Windows programs including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • An appreciation of Slack, Zoom and other remote-friendly tools.
