The Texas Tribune is seeking a technical director to be the lead on all technical aspects of event production for both virtual and in-person events. The technical director brings a high level of digital media production experience for both audio and video. This person establishes and upholds best practices for the recording, streaming and publishing of digital media content for The Texas Tribune’s events department and supports similar productions across the organization. In addition to partnering with the creative director for live events, the technical director also oversees and is responsible for the maintenance and improvements for the infrastructure in our physical recording studio.
The technical director is a key member of the Texas Tribune Festival production team, which hosts one of the largest editorial events in the nation, boasting hundreds of the biggest names in politics and public policy and attracting thousands of attendees to participate in the event.
At the Tribune, events are live expressions of our journalism and bring to life the award-winning reporting of our newsroom through interviews with some of the state’s leading public officials, policy experts and newsmakers. The Tribune hosts more than 50 on-the-record live events annually and has adapted to produce virtual events while in-person events are on hiatus due to the pandemic.
Translate the vision of the events team and provide executable solutions
Work in coordination with other event producers and other department heads to execute productions
Maintain technical documentation for media production pipeline, as well as post-production workflow, for in-person and virtual productions
Serve as technical lead for planning and producing The Texas Tribune Festival
Create scope-of-work documentation for internal and external solutions as the technical lead and primary point of contact for vendors and platforms
Lead meetings and working sessions with the cross-functional teams setting the right expectations, outcomes, and ensuring effectiveness and clear action items
Oversee a budget for ongoing and future expenses related to production
Prepare demonstrations and presentations for senior management and stakeholders
Maintain a high level of quality assurance for digital productions
Research production improvements and new technologies for hardware, software and digital platforms
Experience with planning and executing productions using multichannel audio and video in a live and closed setting
Familiarity with video conferencing software and platforms and their integration into a production setting
Expert knowledge of livestreaming production pipelines
Experience with post-production audio and video workflow
Experience with managing a team of engineers and operators to execute events
