As part of our ongoing commitment to building diverse newsrooms that reflect the communities we serve, Advance Local Media is offering an exciting and unique opportunity to pursue a paid online master’s degree with the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Communications.

Through this fellowship program, the diverse candidate will receive real-life experience working part-time with our newest brand Reckon, while earning their master’s degree. The program features a flexible start date to coincide with Syracuse University’s online term, beginning in July.
 
Alabama Media Group (a company of Advance Local Media) is home to AL.com, Reckon and It’s a Southern Thing.  Reckon is our newest brand covering issues that matter to millennials in the South through innovative, audience-focused journalism and engagement that leads to action.  Our local newsrooms have garnered major awards, including national investigative prizes, Emmys, and a Pulitzer Prize.

As a Reporting Fellow with Reckon, you will be part of a dynamic and inclusive newsroom team focused on local journalism for one of the country’s largest privately owned media companies. Your success will come from producing news stories for various platforms while meeting audience demand for immediacy, depth and engagement. You’ll be supported by our experienced editors, award-winning journalists and producers, and our commitment to provide resources for your successful journalism career.
 
In your part-time role during the academic program, you will: 
  • Be part of an exciting team focused on how the South influences the nation through political movements  
  • Help us tell stories through written text, video and podcasts that go beyond the who and what, to give you the how and why that help us bring change to our communities
  • Bring a diverse skillset, through your voracious consumption of news about the South  
  • Pitch stories about news, trends and conversations
  • Work independently or as a part of teams, across multiple states 
 For this position we’re looking for candidates with: 
  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field 
  • Experience or interest in reporting for a specific audience and authentically engaging with that audience
  • Understanding of news writing, story structure and journalistic principles such as deadline urgency, ethics, and fairness  
  • Experience with digital photography, design, audio and video recording/editing
  • Experience with best practices for social media and SEO
  • An entrepreneurial mindset to our journalistic work with the ability to pivot quickly, and comfort in imagining new and different ways to tell stories
  • Understanding the imperatives and differences between media platforms
  • Fellows can be based anywhere in the South
  • Diverse candidates preferred  
  • A commitment to strengthen and empower the communities we serve
In addition, successful Applicants to the Newhouse School Master of Science in Communications program will have: 
  • Preferred 3.0 or higher undergrad GPA 
  • Positive recommendations from at least one academic source 
  • Positive recommendations from current or former employer(s) 
  • Proven ability to utilize technology
  • Relevant internships
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A clear vision of why you want to pursue this master's degree
