The Denver Post, Colorado’s No. 1 source of news, is seeking a seasoned editor to lead its political/government news coverage.
We are looking for an editor to lead a talented team of experienced journalists, coaching them to write with urgency, depth and authority. We value enterprise and watchdog journalism and – given our highly competitive market – want to be the first to break news important to our readers.
A successful candidate will understand the need to put our readers at the center of all decision making. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of both print and digital journalism, including a willingness to use audience data as a component in editorial choices. We want you to help guide big ideas, hone a lead, and ask tough questions. Our editors engage with reporters in lively discussions about coverage so we are looking for a person comfortable in that atmosphere. You will be part of a team that supports and pitches in as needed. We’re looking for an editor who cares that the newsroom as a whole succeeds and will work to that end.
Newsroom leadership experience, including managing reporters, ensuring they put forward their best work.
Strong news judgment.
Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style.
Strong digital headline writing skills.
WordPress publishing skills.
Understanding of SEO and how to leverage it to build an audience for our content.
Understanding of social media and how groups of interest congregate and share information online. Active participation in those groups.
Knowledge of and ability to assign digital storytelling methods including various tools and creativity to figure out unique and exclusive ways to tell stories.
Knowledge of analytics and how to use them in decision making.
Understanding of fair use, copyright laws and media ethics. Knowledge of social media terms of service.
Degree in journalism, communication or equivalent experience.
10+ years of editorial experience, at least five of it as an editor handling both daily and long-term copy.
A full understanding of AP style and libel law are a must.
A passion for identifying, training, coaching and elevating talented journalists.
Expert knowledge of AP style and grammar.
Weekend and night work is required.
