The News Tribune in Tacoma is looking for a strong, energetic and creative editor to manage its sports and breaking news teams. The right candidate will collaborate with staff in Tacoma and its three sister newspapers across Washington to build strategy around its sports coverage to create impactful enterprise stories geared towards a loyal and paying audience.
We’re looking for someone who is extremely organized, can grow digital readership and subscribers and is a great team player within the teams he or she manages but also broadly across our four news organizations in the state of Washington.
This is a unique role that works in both sports and local news. A typical weekday could include assisting with some late afternoon metro editing, brainstorming ideas for upcoming Seahawks coverage and working with a reporter in Bellingham on a breaking news story. With the coronavirus pandemic raging on across the country, we need a staff that’s easily able to switch gears from one topic to the next without losing its passion for both hard-hitting accountability journalism and providing essential news to our readers every day.
This person needs to be a quick thinker who is well versed in analytics and social media strategies. The right candidate can write a strong SEO headline, brainstorm alternative storytelling ideas like podcasts or documentaries, and assist with a planning budget.
The News Tribune has traditionally covered the Seattle Seahawks, the Seattle Mariners, the University of Washington and high school sports.
Tacoma is a beautiful city in the Pacific Northwest, and while, yes, we cover some professional teams in Seattle, we most certainly aren’t Seattle. We’re proud of our medium-sized city with big-city offerings, our easy access to water and national parks and our up-and-coming brewery and food scene. And when the mountain is out, there isn’t a better view of Mt. Rainier than from the City of Destiny.
