The Connecticut Mirror (www.CTMirror.org) is an established, independent, nonprofit digital news organization, whose mission is to produce original, in-depth, nonpartisan journalism that informs Connecticut residents about the impact of public policy, holds government accountable, and amplifies diverse voices and perspectives.
We have an immediate opening for a full-time Managing Editor with primary responsibility for story editing (origination, development, word editing) across all beats and for accelerating the pace of innovation in CT Mirror’s digital news storytelling.
Specifically, the Managing Editor will work in conjunction with the Executive Editor to oversee day-to-day editing functions. The Managing Editor will also manage our new Data Journalist whose two key roles will be to support other staff in analyzing and visualizing data and in generating her own data-driven stories.
Other Managing Editor responsibilities will include a) identifying and driving innovative ways of telling stories across multiple platforms, b) supporting audience engagement activities, c) identifying insights through analytics that can inform coverage priorities, d) managing an intern, and e) assuming Executive Editor responsibilities when the Executive Editor is not available.
The successful Managing Editor candidate will embrace CT Mirror’s public policy mission and highly collaborative, nonprofit operating model.
Strong editing skills.
Working knowledge of economic development and state budget process, politics, and public policy related to health care, housing, education, and criminal justice, and the environment.
Fluency in basic data analysis and reader analytics.
At least 5 years of digital journalism and editing experience at a daily news organization, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
Bachelor of Arts degree or higher.
The Managing Editor will report to the Executive Editor. The position will be based in our Hartford, CT newsroom.
