WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station, is a public media organization committed to exceptional journalism and deep civic engagement — providing news, analysis and entertainment on air, online at wbur.org, on demand and on stage. WBUR is the home of national programs Here & Now and On Point, reaching millions of listeners each week on more than 500 public radio stations nationwide. The WBUR iLab produces popular podcasts including Circle Round and Endless Thread. WBUR serves its local community with the largest public radio newsroom in the country and with CitySpace a dynamic, new venue for civic discourse and cultural exchange.

The Managing Editor will play a key role in shaping and directing WBUR’s local news coverage, overseeing teams of reporters and editors responsible for investigations, arts and culture, education and the environment.

Reporting to the Executive Editor, News, the position requires someone who is high energy, motivated and proactive. Someone who has a passion for coaching and inspiring reporters and editors to do the best work of their careers. • Fosters collaborative teams and encourages peer learning among newsroom colleagues.
  • Collaborates with departments outside of the newsroom, including the CitySpace team, providing close editorial guidance on events involving newsroom journalists.
  • Occasionally assumes the duties of Executive Editor.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years journalism experience.
  • 5+ years leading, editing and supervising teams and complex projects across multiple platforms on deadline.
  • A record of coaching reporters and editors through sophisticated, high impact projects.
  • An ability to set standards of excellence and to help reporters and editors meet them, providing regular, constructive feedback.
  • Ability to target and expand audience, particularly on digital platforms.
  • Exceptional collaborative and team building skills, with the capacity to build diverse and inclusive environments.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Strong leadership skills, able to build trust, influence and inspire.
