Job Description

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Deputy Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach. In this newly created position, you will help drive and support greater understanding, inclusion and opportunity for colleagues with diverse skills, perspectives and experiences at The Wall Street Journal.

Reporting to the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach, you will spend time with news team leaders, attend coverage meetings and help design and implement training and best practices that ensure a diverse, inclusive and welcoming workplace. You will be an ambassador for the Journal’s newsroom and support the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach in equipping journalists with the skills needed to excel in their careers and create the exceptional journalism for which The Wall Street Journal is known.

You Will:

  • Work across news teams to help develop customized training and outreach solutions that enrich the newsroom's culture of inclusion and, in partnership with the Managing Editor's Office, help to bolster retention and career development.

  • Help manage the Journal's robust year-round training curriculum, new-hire orientation, newsroom internship training curriculum, and inclusion programs such as The WSJ Trust Fellowship, The Wall Street Journal-Morgan State Business Journalism Exchange and WSJ & Lehman Journo-Tech programs.

  • Oversee the newsroom’s weekly Culture, Training & Outreach newsletter, including coordinating and editing content.

  • Help manage the Journal newsroom’s involvement with journalism conferences, such as participation in training and coordination of our attending journalists.

  • Help identify outside training opportunities, fellowships and other programs that could enrich our journalists and our journalism.

  • Ensure that all Journal newsroom training and outreach initiatives support goals for an inclusive and diverse newsroom. Identify ways in which our newsroom can improve in these areas through training and outreach.

  • Manage visits by outside groups to the Journal newsroom.

You Have:

  • A significant background in journalism and at least five years of experience working in a newsroom. A track record as a successful reporter, particularly in business journalism, is a plus.

  • A demonstrated interest in journalism training and mentoring.

  • Experience supporting efforts to make a company more diverse and inclusive would be beneficial, but is not required.

You will report to Brent Jones, the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach. To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter.
