The San Antonio Express-News is seeking an op-ed and letters editor to join our Editorial Board.
At the most basic level, this job is about crafting the community conversation, mixing local and national columnists as well as daily letters to highlight a wide range of perspectives. A Rolodex filled with Texas sources and thought leaders would be helpful, but is not required.
Ideal candidates will seek out op-eds rather than wait for submissions. They will have patience with the public, and will relish working with writers of all skill levels to produce accurate, compelling and strong arguments. They will thrill in editing and publishing surprising pieces that spark the minds and touch the hearts of readers.
As a member of the board, you will also participate in our regular meetings with elected officials and community stakeholders. There will also be opportunities to write editorials and occasional columns and help us expand our digital footprint in new and surprising ways.
This is a full-time position. Experience in journalism is a must. That means knowledge of AP style, understanding the importance of fact checking and a background in either news or opinion writing.
In recent years, the Express-News Editorial Board has twice won first place in editorial writing in the Best of the West Journalism Contest and our award-winning “Unequal Justice” series has prompted a number of local criminal justice reforms.
We are a team that shares in our successes and supports one another at challenging times. We embrace diversity in thought, perspective and backgrounds and hope to hear from a wide range of applicants. Please send a cover letter, resume, writing and/or editing samples to Editorial Page Editor Josh Brodesky at firstname.lastname@example.org.
College degree is required. Five years of experience in opinion journalism or news reporting.
