InsideClimate News, a Pulitzer Prize-winning online publication, is seeking an experienced climate-change and environment editor who can elevate stories and direct journalism of the highest order. The person who fills this position must have extensive — five years or more — editing experience, including short- and long-form articles for major news outlets, and must be comfortable with both breaking news and enterprise stories.
The editor also must have a working familiarity with all aspects of climate journalism— including climate science, clean energy technology and policy, environmental justice, environmental law and climate politics—and know the major players, the major issues and the current state of play. A strong background in science journalism is a plus.
Just as important, the successful candidate must have a proven track record for close and trusting relationships with writers, and for collegial and collaborative bonds with fellow editors. While InsideClimate News is one of the country’s largest environmental newsrooms, it is a small and intimate news organization in which mutual respect, trust and support define our culture and day-to-day operations. We are also a distributed newsroom, with staff members working remotely from San Diego to Maine, and there is no requirement that this editor be based in our Brooklyn, N.Y., newsroom.
The senior editor we seek will, in close concert with the executive and managing editors, lead coverage, initiate story ideas, make assignments, work with writers at all stages of the writing process, edit copy on deadline and, at times, produce stories for our website. Needless to say, this editor must also share our passion for climate journalism.
InsideClimate News is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization. We believe climate change is the most important story of our time, but we do not practice advocacy journalism.
This is a chance to be part of a team that has become a leader in deep reporting on climate change. We prize accuracy, creativity, clarity, flexibility and the ability to find big ideas and revelatory stories in a highly complex and competitive environment.
