Job Description

The Chronicle of Philanthropy, an independent news organization, seeks an experienced editor to lead its opinion section. You will recruit and coach contributors to discuss ideas and solutions that advance foundations and nonprofits as we work to greatly expand the number of opinion articles we publish and drive important conversations about the key issues in the nonprofit world.
You will get to put your mark on this new role in our newsroom. The position requires a strong writer and editor passionate about issues affecting philanthropy and versatile in print and online narrative, visuals, and creative presentations. Most of your time will be spent overseeing opinion pieces that we publish in print and online, putting special emphasis on attracting new voices to share their ideas. You’ll also work on other reporting projects, especially those focused on elevating the Chronicle’s coverage of diversity, equity, and inclusion. You’ll play a key role in expanding our readership and influence.
Applicants should have 10 years of professional experience in writing and editing. We’re especially seeking applicants with demonstrated proficiency as a commissioning editor, ideally at a publication that focuses on big ideas, professional issues, or specific parts of the nonprofit world like education or health.  But what we’re most interested in is your ability to spot smart points of view and help opinion contributors present their thinking in compelling ways. Copyediting and headline writing skills for print and digital audiences are pluses.
Among our highest priorities as a newsroom is hiring and retaining staff members who reflect the diverse world we cover. We strongly encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, three examples of pieces you wrote or edited that show your ability to do this job, three two-paragraph pitches for story ideas, and salary requirements to Indicate “Philanthropy editor” in the subject line.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy has a strong reputation for its mix of news, opinion, and how-to articles produced by the biggest newsroom covering nonprofits and foundation. The Chronicle is widely read by prominent nonprofit leaders, major philanthropists, government officials, and other journalists tracking arts, education, health, housing and other areas.
