Pop-Up Magazine Productions is conducting a national search for a full-time communications director to support our acclaimed live show, Pop-Up Magazine, our weekend magazine, The California Sunday Magazine, our award-winning Brand Studio, and new projects and initiatives.
Pop-Up Magazine is a live magazine, a night of new, live-scored, multimedia stories performed by writers, radio producers, photographers, and filmmakers at large theaters across the country, like Lincoln Center and BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in New York, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, and the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. We have also collaborated on live magazine performances with Beck, ESPN, and National Geographic, and produced special events for the TED Conference, Aspen Ideas Festival, Apple, Hermes, Facebook, and Waze.
The California Sunday Magazine publishes deeply reported stories and beautiful photography from across California, the West, Asia, and Latin America. Launched in late 2014, California Sunday has been a finalist for thirteen National Magazine Awards, including for General Excellence, Magazine of the Year, Reporting, Feature Writing, Design, and Photography, and a winner three times. In 2018 and 2019, the Society of Publication Designers named California Sunday the Magazine of the Year.
Our communications director will ensure that the writers, stories, and ideas in the California Sunday Magazine reach as wide an audience as possible and influence national conversation. This means booking writers on public radio shows, podcasts, and television; circulating stories to news outlets, newsletters, relevant communities, and individual influencers; and imagining creative new ways to elevate the profile of our work.
You will also generate interest and excitement in advance of Pop-Up Magazine’s national tours. Thanks to your efforts, local news outlets, culture sites, and event calendars will alert new audiences to our imaginative “live magazine” shows, and longer interviews and feature stories in local and national media will illuminate our unique form of live journalism. Media and advertising trades will feature the Brand Studio’s innovative work creating custom content for our sponsors.
And you will work closely with the publisher and editor in chief to imagine and execute an ambitious PR strategy for our company—implementing consistent branding and messaging across departments, helping build campaigns around membership promotions and new product launches, thoughtfully deploying members of our staff to events and speaking engagements to further help tell our story, and more.
